Little Surprises

We are getting used to Cliff being gone. OK, that’s what I’m supposed to say. But honestly, after the second week of seeing him less than our dog, the absence wears a little thin. I feel like I’m on an endless loop of dinner and laundry with no break in sight. With Caleb home and no school routine to fall on, it gets a little tougher.

Cliff comes home for one night or a couple days, happy and energized to be back, and I feel like death warmed over and like we’re living two different lives. It’s hard not to feel a little resentful of his “hotel living, restaurant meal indulging, and bringing home the laundry for the little wifey to do so he can leave again” lifestyle.

But I’m supposed to be intentional in being his helper, right? So I shake off the crabbiness and I focus on what we have coming up next. Dinner with his parents.

Since we moved into the house, we haven’t seen a whole lot of the Horns. They still have a full travel schedule of trips Ms. Nancy leads as a tour guide for the travel agency. My mom stays with Mamaw when they’re away, though Mom works during the day, so she’s only at the house at night and a little on weekends. We’ve had the occasional lunch after church with them and the rest of the family, but mostly we’ve spent time working on the house and making sure we’re bringing in the income to pay our bills. It still feels like an uphill climb in many ways, but we’re taking it one step at a time.

Until just last week, we’d been eating at the small four-seater table we’d borrowed from the Horns until we could get a new dining room set. But Cliff and I finally were able to look for a table last week, and after visiting four different stores, we agreed on the table we had liked at the very first store. Now we have an eight-foot table with six real chairs to seat folks. Ten if we bring the portable chairs in and everyone crowds around. It’s time to invite people over.

Ms. Nancy and Mr. Ray weren’t home for Father’s Day, which was a couple of weeks ago, so I thought it would be nice to have them over for dinner so we could at least catch up. I decided to keep the meal simple, so with Cliff’s blessing, I breaded and baked some chicken tenderloins and cooked green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy. I scrubbed the house spotless, and put a pretty white tablecloth out.

It’s hard not to get antsy and worry about what Ms. Nancy thinks. My eyes can already spot a whole lot she’ll notice isn’t right. The out-of-date brass light fixtures and fans. The tacky brass knobs on all the kitchen cabinets. I’m trying to ignore the big scratch across the tile under the dining room table. But that’s what happens when you buy a house that has to get sold.
